Problem

Insights gathered from user interviews revealed a major pain point: the shipping experience is frustrating and inefficient. When players order cards from different sellers on platforms like TCGPlayer, they frequently receive numerous separate packages, each with its own shipping timeline and minimal tracking information. This process creates unnecessary hassle, especially for players eager to build decks quickly and efficiently.

Goals

Deliver an MVP (Minimum Viable Product) for Pull Cards that addresses core pain points by consolidating shipments and enhancing user engagement. The MVP will gather feedback for future iterations.

User Research

For this project, we conducted a survey to understand the behaviors, pain points, and needs of Magic: The Gathering (MTG) players when purchasing cards and using online platforms. We surveyed 30 MTG players, gathering both quantitative and qualitative insights. Here’s a breakdown of the research:

Ideation

After analyzing competitors and identifying user needs, we decided to focus on delivering a Minimum Viable Product (MVP) to launch the startup quickly. This MVP addresses core user frustrations around the trading card buying and selling experience, specifically by simplifying the marketplace flow and solving the shipping inefficiencies.

Key Decisions:

  1. Focus: Create a streamlined marketplace for buying and selling trading cards, excluding community engagement features for now.

  1. User Flow: Prioritize essential actions, such as browsing cards, searching for specific ones, and completing purchases.

  1. Goal: Deliver a functional product that addresses pain points while gathering user feedback for future iterations.

The user flow was carefully designed to streamline the buying and selling process, ensuring a seamless experience for users. It begins on the homepage, where users can browse or search for cards of interest. From there, they navigate to the marketplace to view all available options matching their search. Once a card is selected, users can explore its details and easily add it to their cart. The process concludes with a consolidated checkout system, simplifying shipping and providing a smooth, hassle-free transaction.

Our goal was to bring a functional product to market as quickly as possible to gather real user feedback and refine the design. By concentrating on the essential user flow—browsing, searching, viewing card details, and completing transactions—we avoided scope creep and kept the development process streamlined.

Reflections and Next Steps

Working with a startup as part of a small, two-person design team was an incredible learning experience. I’m proud to have been involved in shaping such a large-scale project from its inception. A big thanks to my team for believing in me and supporting me throughout the process.

Through this journey, I learned how to effectively collaborate with engineers and confidently hand off final deliverables. I pushed myself to explore multiple iterations, present them to my team, and incorporate feedback from user testing. Leveraging our volunteer community, I proactively gathered insights to refine the design.

Looking ahead, I’m excited to carry these lessons into the next iteration of the marketplace. With the initial user testing phase complete, the focus will shift to addressing user feedback, enhancing functionality, and further optimizing the platform to deliver an exceptional user experience.
